case study on max windsor
Now in its fifth year of U.S. operations (importing and distribution), Max Windsor Floors continues to expand and grow. This California-based supplier of high-end, engineered hardwood has flourished, even through the last two years of economic shrinkage.
Its ownership has a long and distinguished history, as well as a profound knowledge of responsible forestry practices dating back more than 40 years. During this time, the Three Wise Men (TWM), Max Windsor’s founders and owners, have been manufacturing hardwood floors for export to Europe and Asia, as well as a broad range of other wood products, including traditional and rustic furniture, ceiling fan blades, wooden parts and accessories for various industrial uses.
The Three Wise Men selected a remote district of northeast China as their principal manufacturing location for wood flooring, near Russia and North Korea, and adjacent to large forest lands owned and managed by the provincial government. As is customary, a partnership was formed between them and the local government, forged on the willingness of TWM to invest heavily in plant and equipment, and hiring readily available local workers. Since the government managed the growth and harvesting of trees (a rare natural resource in China), TWM were encouraged from day one to set up their production facilities in the most environmentally friendly manner conserving both raw materials and energy in the production process.
In recognition of TWM’s track record and ongoing compliance with environmental regulations and management practices, the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) has awarded its factory with FSC certification.
With each passing day, contractors, commercial specifiers and consumers are demanding more products from their suppliers, which reduce or eliminate damage to the planet. Not only does this help the environment, it opens a tremendous business opportunity to those who can build a “greener mousetrap.” Mindful of this, Max Windsor USA has been taking steps to create the environmentally ideal hardwood floor.
Its new generation product line, slated for introduction at Surfaces 2009, sets a standard that answers the question, “How green can a wood floor get?” The company believes it will be the first hardwood line to conform to environmental standards to the point that each and every plank in its 16-SKU collection will have the FSC certification number and logo etched onto the back.
“When it comes to going the extra mile for the environment, others may talk the talk; we walk the walk,” said company spokesperson Joannie Liu. “Not only in our demand for wood of impeccable environmental origins, but in the critical areas of engineering and surface finish, we have spared nothing in our development of a truly ‘new generation’ of hardwood.” Max Windsor has a new and exciting collection still in the works, pending the publication of “blind test” results. Testing is now under way. Come visit the Max Windsor Floors showroom space #1648 at Surfaces 2009 in Las Vegas for updates and possibly a sneak peak of the new collection.
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CALIF.— Hardwood floor manufacturer Max Windsor Floors is going national. Since it launched its line of engineered floors in the U.S. four years ago, the company has confined its sales base to California and adjoining western states.
To expand the line throughout the country, Max Windsor appointed carpet industry veterans Peter Spirer and Bob Rawlins as national marketing managers with the mandate to create national distribution and further develop its brand. Spirer founded Horizon Industries in 1972, which he ran until its sale to Mohawk in 1992. He also served two terms as chairman of the Carpet & Rug Institute and was an original inductee to the Floor Covering Industry Hall of Fame. Rawlins served as Western region vice president for Horizon.
“Only a company as attractive as this could have gotten me back to working full time,” Spirer said. “Bob and I had been planning a venture in the hardwood sector for months. We made a wish list of the kind of product line we wanted and made a sourcing trip to China in November. We returned disappointed and empty handed. There’s plenty of wood made there, but we didn’t find any situation with real substance.
“But in mid-December, Bob called me with a simple message: ‘Tear up the list. We found what we’ve been looking for, and it’s just up the road here in California.’” A week later, the former colleagues and close friends had structured an agreement with Max Windsor Floors to take the company national.
Rawlins was particularly impressed with Max Windsor’s growth. “The momentum of this company is amazing. Customers swear by the product and think the world of company management.” This was particularly evident at Surfaces, he said. “Not only did we succeed in showing the line to scores of new buyers from around the country, but hundreds of the company’s existing accounts came to see and buy the new introductions. There was an energy on our stand which was nothing short of fantastic. You would never know that business is soft for many of these store owners and buyers. They could not have been more enthusiastic.”
Khelin Young, general manager, Max Windsor, said the company has aspired to gain a foothold on the national scene but was unsure of how to go about it. “But when we met with Bob and Peter, we were able to see the stages of development through the eyes of people who had successfully done exactly what we were seeking.”
The company claims its extraordinary sales growth is based on an equally extraordinary philosophy: Manufacture immaculate quality product, sell it at competitive prices and never be out of stock.
Max Windsor floors are manufactured in northern China in a modern facility of more than 1 million square feet. The factory adjoins wood forests where several domestic species are grown in accordance with strict forest conservation practices. North American wood species as well as South American, Asian and African exotics are imported to broaden the spectrum of selection. Much of the production is earmarked for export to Europe and the U.S., with the rest sold domestically.
“This is a dazzling challenge, and we love it,” Spirer said. “This company knows how to do business the right way, and customers pick up on that instinctively. Bob and I are excited to have made this liason. Now it is our responsibility to seek and bring on the best sales agents in the country and establish a network of the nation’s leading retailers. We have more than 20 open territories, which we will soon be filling. For us, it’s building a business from scratch. This is how it begins. This is the fun part.”

General Manager
By Joannie Liu, Vice president of operations, Max Windsor Floors
There was a time, in the not too far distant past, when a derogatory appellation for someone who was passionate about the environment was “tree hugger.” How far we have all come in so few years. Now, a person with disregard for the virtues of conservation and Earth-friendly practices is viewed as a pariah. As a growing number of people tune into the things we can do to stop the desecration of our world, commercial opportunities have opened. Sensitivity to environmental concerns has become good business and is fast-approaching the status of big business.
As we watch the current election sparring, it is hard to have an hour pass without hearing references to global warming, energy crisis and save our planet. One candidate seeks to outdo the other in his promises to stop reliance on foreign oil and promote alternative energy sources. Pretty impressive, but guess what? The flooring industry has been on an energy-saving, planet-saving campaign for years, recycling old carpet into new, emptying dump sites, ridding its vast variety of products of harmful chemicals, developing non petroleum energy sources, and creating new resilient and carpet products of an earth-friendly nature. Flooring is one of America’s most advanced industries as that relates to the environment.
It seems each initiative manufacturers have taken has seen a payback. These initiatives not only save money, but also open new marketing avenues. Distributors and retailers have joined the effort to make our industry’s products and practices green.
Many manufacturers have long recognized the benefits of green, if not as yet on a major scale among consumers, then, certainly, in its attractiveness to the architect/specifier/commercial contractor community. The consumer will not be left far behind. There are definite signs of growing demand by homeowners for products that are greener, safer and more politically correct. Education of the consumer toward the immediate and longer-term benefits of green are a shared responsibility by manufacturer, distributor and retailer alike. Better and safer products add luster to the image of our industry and inspire consumers to buy.
There is a role here for each of us to play in this progressive industry. It is helpful to the planet, it will allow us a better night’s sleep, and it’s great job security
